SILK (Secure Internet LinKed) Web technologies

The SILK (Secure Internet LinKed) Web technologies allow users to create and run their own Web servers using NIH Computer Center hardware and software. Web pages can be easily uploaded from desktop PCs and all server management is performed by the owner via a Web browser. NIH Computer Center users can have data immediately accessible on the Web. Enterprise applications can be available through a Web interface. Users can build their own Web-based applications. SILK Web technology—which incorporates a platform-independent view of servers, applications, and data—provides robust, state-of-the-art capabilities to the NIH enterprise environment in an uncomplicated and inexpensive manner. See http://silk.nih.gov.

Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Formerly this government agency was called the Health Care Financing Agency (HCFA). In 1965, the Social Security Act established both Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare was a responsibility of the Social Security Administration (SSA), while Federal assistance to the State Medicaid programs was administered by the Social and Rehabilitation Service (SRS). SSA and SRS were agencies in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). In 1977, the Health Care Financing Administration was created under HEW to effectively coordinate Medicare and Medicaid. In 1980 HEW was divided into the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is the renamed HCFA and is a division of HHS. See http://cms.hhs.gov.
